She began her career in her home country of Cuba and had a leading role in the romantic drama Una rosa de Francia. For her performance as nurse Marta Cabrera in the mystery film Knives Out (2019), de Armas was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical and won the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress. In 2021, de Armas reunited with her Knives Out co-star Daniel Craig to play a Bond girl in Cary Joji Fukunaga’s No Time to Die. Fukunaga wrote the character of a Cuban CIA agent with de Armas in mind. She described the character as bubbly and “very irresponsible”.
